December 2nd: Charpentier's marriage of folk tradition and the Midnight Mass
A completely original idea at the time
Using popular carols in church music was not new in 17th Century Paris, but basing a whole mass on these songs was something new entirely. Incorporating eleven noëls, most of which are dance-like in character, says much for the composer’s craftsmanship in blending these different idioms so seamlessly together.
