Robert, a sensitive and introspective man, whose polarizing personal struggles and circumstance shaped a life of Jobian proportions, is quite literally patient zero for music critics' disease of qualifying legitimacy by equating it with mental state. A published critic himself, Robert's contemporary detractors labelled him either too conservative, or delusional and idiosyncratic, depending on how they wanted to explain why they didn’t like what he was producing. Indeed to this day, attempting to figure out what was going on in Robert’s head has been an almost obsessive part of analyzing his music.
